Do you have a feed that Brief doesn't seem to read?

http://validator.w3.org/feed/

Check to see if the feed is valid before posting any complaints about Brief not reading a feed. Invalid feeds are most often the cause of why Brief can't read certain feeds. As to why there can be invalid feeds, it could be just coding problems or the authors of the feed using a wrong feed type for their site.

Atom feeds require strict following of it's standards. If there's even one deviation from standards, the whole feed will fail and many RSS readers may not display invalid Atom feeds properly or refuse to display them at all. RSS 2.0 feeds don't have many standards to follow so feed authors have more flexibility in how they wish to display their feeds. RSS readers also will have more flexibility in how they choose to render RSS feeds for display.

Re: Do you have a feed that Brief doesn't seem to read?

I just received the update of my feed (http://feeds.rapidfeeds.com/12451/) 2 weeks after I posted a new item. I don't know if it's still a bug or because the problem was fixed.

PS : Sorry, I wanted to delete this message to post this in my previous topic, but I can't.

The feed's fully valid now. If you can't seem to draw new updates...

1) Reload the Live Bookmark with Firefox. See if anything changes. Visit the feed's actual URL if you must.
2) Launch a manual update of the feed in Brief.

If you don't receive any new updates in Brief even after that, then it's possible the feed isn't using the right tags despite being valid. See Brief uses a fingerprint system to ID which items are new, which are old, and which have been updated. There could be a chance that the feed author isn't using the right tags and thusly is stuck with an unchanging fingerprint. That would be something for ancestor to do since Brief would need updating to be able to account for updating feeds that don't generate new fingerprints with each update.

Re: Do you have a feed that Brief doesn't seem to read?

It seems I must "update" my new feeds if I want that Brief see it. Probably the problem about right tags you explained.
Good to know =)

Re: Do you have a feed that Brief doesn't seem to read?

I've got a problem with a feed containing PNG images. The site (graphjam.com) contains a mix of posts with JPG and PNG images. Firefox displays the pages just fine, and I have no trouble with PNG anywhere else in Firefox, can Brief can't deal. The PNG-containing post blows up to fill the screen, blacked out. I checked the feed at the Validator site and it told me the following line was potentially unsafe and I assume is the one causing the problem because of bad style tags?

Any CSS change I can make to override it? Not a huge issue, of course - I can live without this feed :-)
I've notified the site owners.

Thanks, and LOVE Brief.

Re: Do you have a feed that Brief doesn't seem to read?

Hi, I've been scouring these forums trying to figure out why Brief won't update my feeds, when I've determined that the feeds are valid and they appear to be updating properly in Live Bookmarks.  The only answer I've found is that Brief uses a fingerprint system based on a set of tags in the feed to determine which items are new or not.  If Brief is not updating a feed, it's likely because the feed author is using the wrong set of tags.
Now, since I'm the feed author and my feed isn't working, could you please tell me which set of tags Brief needs to see?  This information would be very helpful in getting my feeds working in Brief.  Thank you very much.

Re: Do you have a feed that Brief doesn't seem to read?

Hi Joel. It is unlikely that your particular problem is caused by fingerprinting. It would be helpful if you described the symptoms in a little more detail.

What happens exactly when you click press the button that checks feed for updates? Did Brief use to update your feeds correctly but doesn't any more? Or has it never worked?

Secondly, you could check if Brief reports any errors. To to that, you need to type about:config in the Location Bar, find a preference called javascript.options.showInConsole and double click on it to change its value to true. Then open Tools -> Error Console, try to update the feeds and observe if any errors pop up. If so, please paste them so I can see them.

I have a feed that Brief doesn't seem to read

Hello,
Brief doesn't read one of my favorite sites, http://www.pravda.com.ua/export.xml
validator.w3.org reports several errors but this feed works OK in other software, for example in GreatNews. If will be great if you can help.
Regards,
Volodymyr

Re: I have a feed that Brief doesn't seem to read

Have you reported the broken feed to the website who runs the feed, vlotsk?  Also there are plans for Brief to become a more loose feed reader, but I have no idea when the plans will become reality.

Yes, i did. But i'm  not shure if they will fix it, because this is not "under-construction" site but one of the most popular in the country. So they can decide "if that worked this way all that time - no reason to change something" :)
Also this RSS is good example of real-life feed with minor defects. If Brief will work with such kind of a feeds - it will be better.
