Hi,
I am running firefox 3.5 and brief 1.2.1. While the same config works fine on windows, on my linux box i am unable to see any news items. I have attached a screenshot alongwith to explain what's happening. Also, i cant mark things as read/unread etc.
Please help me with this.
Thanks

Re: Brief doesnt show news items
Are you using your distro's version of Firefox? Remember Brief will only work with Firefox versions found at Mozilla's site.
Distros often modify Firefox for their own needs that result in broken extensions and themes during OS updates. Though if you want to get to the bottom of this problem, try a new profile with nothing but Brief and a few Live Bookmarks installed to it.
While on this new profile, monitor the Error Console (Tools > Error Console) for any error messages related to Brief. Record those error messages and report them back here. If you have no trouble in your new profile, then something is conflicting with Brief in your original profile.
If you have problems in your new profile, then there's the possibility your distro broke Brief during OS updates -- provided if you're using the distro's version of Firefox. You may want to conduct the new profile test with the Firefox version from Mozilla's site as well to make sure there really aren't bugs in Brief.
Re: Brief doesnt show news items
Hi,
i have the same problem like ambasta. I tried all your advises (new profile, no-distro specific browser) and finally I found some logs in Error Console (if I start firefox with -jsconsole):
Brief:
SQL statement: ALTER TABLE feeds ADD COLUMN oldestAvailableEntryDate INTEGER
Brief:
SQL statement: ALTER TABLE feeds ADD COLUMN lastUpdated INTEGER
Brief:
SQL statement: ALTER TABLE entries ADD COLUMN secondaryID TEXT
Fehler: [Exception... "'Error: Component returned failure code: 0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE) [mozIStorageConnection.executeSimpleSQL] Stack: undefined Database error: duplicate column name: secondaryID' when calling method: [nsIObserver::observe]" nsresult: "0x8057001c (NS_ERROR_XPC_JS_THREW_JS_OBJECT)" location: "<unknown>" data: no]
I will try to fix this on my own, but I am not used to the coding of firefox extensions, so I have no idea, if I can find a solution!
Thank you!

For your information: I use Gentoo Linux, Mozilla Firefox 3.5 and latest Brief (1.2.1)
Re: Brief doesnt show news items
Same Problem here.
The console shows this:
Fehler: uncaught exception: [Exception... "'Error: Component returned failure code: 0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE) [mozIStorageConnection.createStatement] Stack: undefined Database error: no such module: fts3' when calling method: [nsIBriefQuery::getFullEntries]" nsresult: "0x8057001c (NS_ERROR_XPC_JS_THREW_JS_OBJECT)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://brief/content/feedview.js :: FeedView_refresh :: line 786" data: no]
System:
Gentoo, Firefox-3.5
Re: Brief doesnt show news items
Brief looks fantastic. Just what I was looking for in a Feed Reader.
Unfortunately I have the same problem: My Bookmarks and Feeds are all empty. I have installed and removed Brief several times but it only shows names of folders of Bookmarks and Feeds but absolutely no content.
Is this a known bug? Any ideas?
Help is appreciated. Keep up the good work.
Best
Oliver
Re: Brief doesnt show news items
Oliver, have you told Brief to check the folder in Places (Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks) that contains your Live Bookmarks? You can check to see by opening Brief's Options and going to the Feeds part of Brief's Options.
Re: Brief doesnt show news items
Thanks for the reply. No, actually, I have not. Cannot locate the folder.
Have Vista Business 64 and it keeps telling me I do not have permission to view the folder. Any ideas how to proceed?
Thanks again
Re: Brief doesnt show news items
Just wanted to say I've got this same problem. Brief worked great until I upgraded to brief 3.5 (now 3.5.1). I'm running Gentoo AMD64.
Re: Brief doesnt show news items
I was having the same problem (on Vista64), and solved it a few minutes ago by upgrading both FF and Brief. It seems that there is an incompatibility between versions.
Re: Brief doesnt show news items
Same problem here. Gentoo AMD64, Firefox 3.5.1.
Error: uncaught exception: [Exception... "'Error: Component returned failure code: 0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE) [mozIStorageConnection.createStatement] Stack: undefined Database error: no such module: fts3' when calling method: [nsIBriefQuery::getFullEntries]" nsresult: "0x8057001c (NS_ERROR_XPC_JS_THREW_JS_OBJECT)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://brief/content/feedview.js :: FeedView_refresh :: line 786" data: no]
when trying to read news and nothing shows in the normal area. Blank profile except for Brief shows the same.
EDIT:
Should have checked more, the error with fts3 missing seems to have been reported here http://brief.mozdev.org/drupal/node/207 and there's a gentoo bug for it: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=207701
Re: Brief doesnt show news items
same problem on Gentoo 32bit... as I see bug in gentoo, problem is in fulltextsearch support in sqlite. Why brief use such feature when "only" displaying feeds? I thing that problem is on both sides.
Re: Brief doesnt show news items
Brief worked great (on Windows, not Linux, Firefox 3.5, Brief 1.2.1) after downloading it yesterday. However, today when I marked an item as Read, it was instead deleted. At one point I accidentally hit the wrong button when heading for the Headlines View button, apparently hitting the Mark All As Read button instead, and ALL items were DELETED from all feeds. No matter what I did I could not get them back.
So I decided to try deleting the brief.sqlite file, and I'm now back in business. Just thought you'd like to know.
Re: Brief doesnt show news items
Just now had a repeat of what happened earlier today. Read an item, hit Mark as Read, and poof, it was gone -- deleted. (Again Windows, Firefox 3.5, and Brief 1.2.1). And again fixed by deleting frief.sqlite -- which, of course, takes me back to square one, in terms of what I've read and what I have not read.
What's going on?
Re: Brief doesnt show news items
Um... What viewpoint are you in? Remember Brief has three special folders and four views. Three of the four views will not work in the special folders.
The special folders:
Unread Folder - Shows all unread items from all feeds. Headlines View works in this folder.
Bookmarks Folder - Shows all starred items from all feeds. Headlines View works in this folder.
Trash Folder - Shows all items deleted from all feeds. Headlines View works in this folder.
Now the four views:
Headlines View - Compacts the display to a brief headlines view. Select an item in order and click the expand arrow by it to view the item's entire contents. This view can be used in the special folders.
View Unread - Shows only the unread items in a feed. This view can't be used in the special folders.
View Bookmarks - Shows only the starred items in a feed. This view can't be used in the special folders.
View All - Shows all items in a feed. This view can't be used in the special folders.
If you're in the Unread Folder or are in a feed with View Unread set, items you mark read will disappear from view. To see them again, go to their feeds and shift the view to View All.

Re: Brief doesnt show news items
I keep View always set to View All -- in all folders/feeds.
Re: Brief doesnt show news items
Try a new profile with nothing but Brief and a few Live Bookmarks installed to it. While testing Brief in this new profile, do record any Brief related errors that appear in the Error Console (Tools > Error Console) and report those errors back here.
If Brief works as it should in the new profile, then something in your original profile is conflicting with Brief. If Brief doesn't work as it should in the new profile, then there may be bugs in need of stomping.

Re: Brief doesnt show news items
I don't know why it always takes me so long to realize I need to check for add-on incompatibilities -- I'm certainly familiar with the drill. I deleted one add-on earlier today, and Brief has been running fine since then. If problems continue, I'll continue sleuthing, and if add-ons are ruled out, I'll get back to you with that info. & the log's Brief-related errors. Thanks.
