Brief enabled hangs and slows Firefox 3.5

It makes Firefox 3.5 real slow even when the add-on is only showing in the lower right bottom, not even opened but still running. It is set for checking every hour. I disenabled it and enabled Sage II and the Firefox app went back to being ok. So I isolated the problem. But I prefer Brief to Sage II. Can you help? It seems to make FF not responsive to commands. Re: Brief enabled hangs and slows Firefox 3.5

In about:config, modify the following preferences to your liking:
extensions.brief.update.backgroundFetchDelay - How long Brief takes to check each feed for new items when Brief is closed.
extensions.brief.update.defaultFetchDelay - How long Brief takes to check each feed for new items when Brief is open.
extensions.brief.update.startupDelay - How long Brief will wait following Firefox startup before checking feeds for new items.

All values are in milliseconds. So 1,000 milliseconds are equal to one second.

Re: Brief enabled hangs and slows Firefox 3.5

Not the answer I was hoping for. I have disabled Brief and FF is back to semi-snappy. I'll look for an update from you to eventually fix this problem, I can't be the only one complaining, and in the interim I'll enable Brief only as needed and use it. I use it to update mpdsupport.org with medical information.  So I'll have to disable again, I'll run it for an hour or so even crippled as Sage II isn't as good for me. If I keep Brief open and running FF becomes almost unusable. Maybe I have 150 feeds and it hangs and stalls FF even with refresh set for just once a day. It is just no good the way it is now. I'm not going to monkey with default settings, thank you. But when it works it is excellent.

None of the above is showing when I go to about:config and search for each of them.

Re: Brief enabled hangs and slows Firefox 3.5

Hello, lov2laf.

These preferences have to be there, did you check that when Brief was enabled?

So what you're saying is that you have set Brief to update feeds only once a day, but you experience slow downs all the time? This is bizzare, because it doesn't do anything else in the background. Yes, some people have reported slow downs, but only while Brief is refreshing feeds, not all the time.

Then at least have a run through this page and try the troubleshooting tips listed to find what all is causing your problems and resolve them.

Even if you only type "brief" in the search box?

Re: Brief enabled hangs and slows Firefox 3.5

I followed your excellent advice to check solutions at http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_hangs, and I went through each add-on I have installed looking for conflict or suggestion. Uncheck "Show Tabs on Flash and Java" in Adblock Plus options, seems to get me back up to speed even with Brief running with maybe 200 rss feeds.
Thank you so much. I was not aware of the Mozilla site for troubleshooting.

Actually Mozilla's official support site is SUMO, but they were down yesterday so I ended up posting the mozillaZine link instead.  You can learn about mozillaZine here.
